B.Sc. in Computer Science (CSCIN)

The Computer Science (CSCIN) programme was launched by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering more than 40 years ago. It is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and has gained an international reputation for excellent research and teaching.

Over the years, we have built up a strong alumni network in the computer industry of Hong Kong. Many of our graduates have taken up important positions in various organizations and companies, such as the Hong Kong Government, Intel, Microsoft, IBM, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo, Deloitte, investment banking institutes and Google. Through this network, our CSCIN graduates can enjoy a comparative advantage in professional career development. Apart from choosing to work in the industry, some graduates have entered our postgraduate programmes or similar programs in world-renowned universities overseas for postgraduate education.

The CSCIN programme covers the following areas:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Big Data Analytics
  • Bioinformatics
  • Computer and Network Security
  • Computer Systems and Networking
  • Computer-aided Design
  • Databases
  • Digital Hardware Technologies
  • Information Systems
  • Internet
  • Multimedia Technology
  • Programming Languages
  • Software Engineering
  • Theoretical Computer Science

Starting from the 2022 entry, the CSCIN programme will adopt department-based admission through Computer Science and Engineering. Applicants wishing to pursue the programme should apply to JS4412 / BCSEN directly.

Applicants seeking admission on the strength of HKDSE examination results should submit their applications via JUPAS. Admission is based on the Best 5 HKDSE subject results with subject weighting applied.

Local applicants with other qualifications can apply through the “non-JUPAS admission” scheme. These qualifications include Associate Degree/Higher Diploma, HKALE, GCE, IB, SAT/AP and other overseas qualifications for university admission. Please visit Local Admission Requirement of Office of Admissions and Financial Aid for more details.

International applicants who require a student visa to study in Hong Kong can apply through the “International Students Admissions Scheme”. The applicants must possess relevant high-school or post-secondary qualifications, e.g., GCE-AL, IB, SAT/AP (USA), GSAT (Taiwan), OSSD (Canada), and ATAR (Australia). Please visit Oversea Admission Requirement of Office of Admissions and Financial Aid for more details.

For both schemes, applicants will be considered on the basis of their education background and academic achievements. To make the applications more competitive, applicants are expected to demonstrate outstanding abilities in English, mathematics and science subjects.

Local applicants with associate degree / high diploma qualifications can also apply for the Senior Year admission. Normally, we expect the applicants to have achieved an overall GPA ≥ 3.0 (or equivalent), and have fulfilled the University’s language requirements. Preference will be given to those who have performed well in mathematics and relevant disciplines. Successful applicants will be admitted directly to the CSCIN major programme.

Depending on students’ financial situation, or their outstanding performance in academic or other areas, the Government and the University may provide various scholarships and financial aid schemes to support the student’s learning in CUHK.
