The Computer Engineering (CENGN) programme was formally established when the Faculty of Engineering was inaugurated in 1991. It is a balanced programme with an emphasis on both computer hardware and software. It distinguishes itself from others by offering specialized training for students in computer design, mobile embedded systems, microprocessors and very large-scale integrated circuit (VLSI) design.
With the advances in VLSI and microprocessors, innovative products such as smartphones, 3D TVs, digital cameras, supercomputers, computer games, etc. are invented continuously. Given the new challenges and opportunities ahead, our CENGN programme is designed to equip our CSEers to meet those demands. Many of our CENGN graduates have successfully pursued their careers in local and international companies such as Intel, Microsoft, IBM, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo, Deloitte, investment banking institutes and Google. Others have chosen to further their studies in our postgraduate programme or programmes in internationally renowned universities overseas.
The CENGN curriculum consists of courses in the following areas:
- Application: mobile embedded devices, computer graphics, multimedia processing
- Computer hardware: circuitry theory, logic system design, computer architecture and interfacing, computer arithmetic
- Computer software: programming, data structure, operating systems, algorithm, software engineering
- Very large-scale integrated circuit (VLSI) design: computer-aided design and applications
- System connectivity: computer network
Other advanced topics include:
- Hardware-accelerated bio-related processing
- Hardware-aided security
- Multi-core systems and architecture
- Reconfigurable computing
Starting from the 2022 entry, the CENGN programme will adopt department-based admission through Computer Science and Engineering. Applicants wishing to pursue the programme should apply to JS4412 / BCSEN directly.
Applicants seeking admission on the strength of HKDSE examination results should submit their applications via JUPAS. Admission is based on the Best 5 HKDSE subject results with subject weighting applied.

Preferred subjects: Biology / Chemistry / Physics / Information and Communication Technology / Design and Applied Technology / Mathematics Extended Module 1 or 2
Any other subjects:
In addition to the requirements above, bonus points will be awarded to the 6th and 7th subjects, if any.
Local applicants with other qualifications can apply through the “non-JUPAS admission” scheme. These qualifications include Associate Degree/Higher Diploma, HKALE, GCE, IB, SAT/AP and other overseas qualifications for university admission. Please visit Local Admission Requirement of Office of Admissions and Financial Aid for more details.
International applicants who require a student visa to study in Hong Kong can apply through the “International Students Admissions Scheme”. The applicants must possess relevant high-school or post-secondary qualifications, e.g., GCE-AL, IB, SAT/AP (USA), GSAT (Taiwan), OSSD (Canada), and ATAR (Australia). Please visit Oversea Admission Requirement of Office of Admissions and Financial Aid for more details.
For both schemes, applicants will be considered on the basis of their education background and academic achievements. To make the applications more competitive, applicants are expected to demonstrate outstanding abilities in English, mathematics and science subjects.
Local applicants with associate degree / high diploma qualifications can also apply for the Senior Year admission. Normally, we expect the applicants to have achieved an overall GPA ≥ 3.0 (or equivalent), and have fulfilled the University’s language requirements. Preference will be given to those who have performed well in mathematics and relevant disciplines. Successful applicants will be admitted directly to the CENGN major programme.
Depending on students’ financial situation, or their outstanding performance in academic or other areas, the Government and the University may provide various scholarships and financial aid schemes to support the student’s learning in CUHK.
Please refer to here for more details.
The double-degree Computer Engineering / Integrated Business Administration option is open to students who have qualified for admission to both programmes. Following the successful completion of a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science, students can continue their studies for an additional year to gain a BBA degree.
