The Regular admission scheme for M.Phil. and Ph.D. programme for 2025-2026 Intake at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at CUHK (CUHK CSE) now invites applications from outstanding undergraduate and master students from prestigious universities around the world. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong was the first Computer Science department in Hong Kong and is well-known internationally for her high-quality research and teaching. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an oral interview in English. The result will be released within one week after the interview. Applicants who are unsuccessful in Early Admission are still encouraged to apply our programme for Regular Admission.
Admission criteria are mainly based on academic performance, research ability and potential, communication skills, and English proficiency. All admitted full-time research students will receive a stipend of around HK$18,725/month during their normative study period. Exceptional PhD applicants will be recommended to apply for the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme, and successful applicants will receive a stipend of HK$28,100/month and a research and travel grant of HK$14,000/year.
To apply:
- Create an account in Graduate School’s admission system.
For full-time research doctoral applicants, they are required to invite at least THREE referees to complete the Confidential Recommendations Report. After successfully submitted the application, applicants can input information of the referees through the Online Application System for Postgraduate Programmes. The University will send invitations for confidential recommendations to the referees.
For applicants applying for other postgraduate programmes, the number of referees required is TWO and the same procedures as above apply. - You will receive an email from CSE Department that an account has been created for you in Department’s admission system.
- Upload both CV AND updated transcript to Department’s admission system for review before deadline. Missing either one of the required documents will not be considered.
- Shortlisted candidate (selected by GP or nominated by individual professors) will receive an invitation email for an interview.
The following documents should be uploaded to Graduate School’s admission system:
- Latest original Official Transcript (with a Registry official stamp)
- Official Grading Scheme (with a Registry official stamp)
- This document should clearly indicate if you can obtain a grade of ‘B’ or not. It should include the corresponding score ranges or percentage ranges for each grade in the final official transcript. For example, B = 3.0 – 3.5 / 80 – 90. (If there is no such grading scheme, please provide a registry letter certifying that your university does not have a grading scheme for classifying students.)
- Copy of Graduation Certificate AND Diploma Certificate (Chinese version for graduates from universities in China) (if you will graduate in 2025, please submit them before Aug, 2025)
- For graduates from universities in China: Copy of Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certification 「教育部學歷證書電子註冊備案表」AND Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certification 「教育部學歷證書電子註冊備案表」issued by the CHESICC (if you will graduate in 2025, please submit it before Aug, 2025)
- Original English Language Proficiency reports
- TOEFL (overall not lower than 79)
- IELTS (not lower than Band 6.5)
- GMAT (Verbal not lower than 21)
- Have a degree / recognized professional qualification awarded from a university in Hong Kong or an English speaking country
- ID card / passport copy

After interview:
- No matter successful or not, candidates will receive notification.
- The profiles of successful candidates will be circulated. To proceed further, candidates must initiate a conversation with one of our CSE professors to discuss their academic interests and qualifications. If a professor deems the candidate a suitable student, an offer will be extended to him/her by the Graduate School during Jan/May 2025.
