Data Mining Technical Committee, IEEE Computational Intelligence Society...

March 12, 2007. Prof. Irwin King accepted the invitation to be a member of the Data Mining Technical Committee, IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. This year's Chair is Prof. Kate Smith-Miles (Deakin University, Australia), together with Vice-Chairs Prof. Eamonn Keogh (USA) and Prof. Alessandro Sperduti (Italy). The goals of the DMTC are to: (1) promote the research, development, education and understanding of data mining principles and applications and (2) to help researchers whose background is primarily in computational intelligence in increasing their contributions to this area. CUPIDE's Team Won the Poster Award at the EXPO Excellence Online...

October 18 2007. Congratulations to the CUPIDE team for winning the Poster Award at the Expo: Excellence Online event hosted by the eLS@CU to share our experiences in using the web technology in teaching and learning.

CUPIDE at the Innovation Expo 2007...

September 14, 2007. The Innovation Expo 2007 showcased the latest achievements of innovative projects in Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The CUPIDE project was showcased among other projects from the the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The opening addresses were given by:

CUHK Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence 2009..

November 2009. Congratulations to Mr. Tom Chao Zhou for being awarded a scholarship from the CUHK Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence.

The Global Scholarship program for research excellence (CNOOC) Grants for 2009-10 is to (1) strengthen CUHK's ties with leading research universities and institutes that have been identified as potential strategic partners; (2) provide opportunities for students and teaching staff to conduct research at partner universities of CUHK that may lead to further collaborations and academic exchange; and (3) foster research development and facilitate high impact publications so as to increase the visibility of CUHK as a world-class research university. It supports research activity of a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 6 months.

For this scholarship, Mr. Tom Chao Zhou will visit and collaborate with Prof. Tat-Seng Chua, Dept. of Computer Science, National Singapore University in April 2010.

The Global Scholarship program for research excellence (CNOOC) Grants for 2008-09 is to (a) strengthen CUHK's ties with 23 leading research universities and institutes in the world, (b) build a collaboration network for enhancing levels of excellence in focused research areas and ( c) increase the visibility of CUHK as a world-class research university. It supports research activity of a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 6 months.

For this scholarship, Mr. Haiqin Yang will visit and collaborate with Prof. Stephen Boyd, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University starting in April 2009.

WCCI2008 Panel Session on Funding Opportunities...

June 5, 2008. Prof. Irwin King was invited as a panelist to share information on funding opportunities in Hong Kong from the Research Grants Councils' point of view as Prof. King is a member of the Engineering Panel. The panelists include representatives from the United States, Japan, European Commission, Brazil, Australia, and Hong Kong. Update on Dr. Richard Sia...

January 2009. Dr. Richard Sia has just defended his thesis at the Department of Computer Science, UCLA in December 2008. His thesis is entitled, “Challenges and Opportunities in Building Personalized Online Content Aggregators”. His current research work is centered around Web 2.0 content monitoring and mining. Dr. Sia will be joining Microsoft Live Search as software engineer in February 2009.

Richard was one of CUHK's own. He received his undergraduate B.S. degree and M.Phil. degree, both from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Two Papers Accepted to SIGIR2007...

SIGIR2007 April 5, 2007. Congratulations to Haixuan Yang and Hao Ma for having their papers accepted to SIGIR2007 to be held from 23-27 of July in Amsterdam. SIGIR2007 is competitive as usual and the acceptance rate is about 17.5% (86/491). See other related publications <here>.

Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2007...

March 4, 2007. The road runner gang from the Engineering Faculty of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, CUHK, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University ran the Standard Chartered Marathon 2007. Prof. Irwin King did not complete the full marathon, but finished the half marathon in 2:50. The weather was hot and humid. The temperature was around 21 degree celsius and it rained that morning with a humidity of 95%. The full marathon started at 7:40 am and the winner took 2:17 (five more minutes than last year's winner) to complete the tough 42.2 KM course.

Prof. Michael Lyu and Xiang Peng also ran the Half Marathon under 3 hours. Congratulations to them!
