2 Course Description & ILOs

This is an introductory course on the basic understanding of engineering knowledge and associated technologies information science. It encourages students’ appreciation of the multidisciplinary nature of engineering, through the lens of information science, and a wide variety of its applications. It also develops students’ ability in applying analytical and computational tools to solve practical engineering problems. Modern topics in engineering and information science, such as machine learning and data science, will be introduced. Upon completion of the course, students are able to:

identify the basic knowledge and technologies related to engineering and information science;
recognize and explore multiple fields of engineering and information science;
discuss engineering design process and how to apply it for designing and developing engineering solution;
use various software tools for engineering simulation and analysis.

4 Assessment Framework

Revision Exercise (15%) A number of revision exercises will be handed out in the format of SOUL quizzes throughout the semester. Each set of exercises contains 10 multiple choice questions. Once you start an attempt, you will have 24 hour to complete and submit it. (Assuming your attempt is initiated more than 24 hours before the due time.)
Homework Assignments (12%) A number of problem sets will be released throughout the semester. The submission deadline is normally one-two weeks from its release but pay attention to the due time specified in each problem set. No late submission will be accepted. Specific arrangements are detailed in this document.
Laboratories (12%) Laboratories will be conducted during class hours. Students shall complete the tasks as assigned and demonstrate their work (and/or product) to the instructor before the end of class. Due to limited supply of components, ad-hoc groupings in laboratories are mandatory.
Midterm Examination (21%) The midterm exam is scheduled on 2:30–4:00pm, November 6, 2022. Leave applications due to appropriate reasons, such as time clash with public exams, shall reach us no later than 5pm, Sep 24, 2022. No make-up unless for verified medical leave; urgency leave will be considered case-by-case.
Final Examination (40%) TBA

5 Email Policy

We adopt the college email as the primary communication channel beyond class time. Students seeking help from lecturers shall use their @learner.hkuspace.hku.hk address to prevent from being spammed. Improperly compiled messages, such as untitled and unaddressed ones, shall be ignored. Emails written in languages other than English will be ignored. It will be helpful to include your student ID and class number in closing your message. Normally speaking, students may expect a reply in two days time. Unattended messages may be assumed to have been lost and students may consider resending so.
