The selection committee considered several criteria in coming to its decision. A review of citations was undertaken to identify a pool of candidates, followed by a challenger/champion approach to identify the winning paper. The winning paper is assessed by the committee for impact, influence, novelty, and significance.

Prof Fu has previously received the Influential Paper Award at the 25th IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE) (2009) for her paper “Efficient Time Series Matching by Wavelets” presented in 1999.
