Undergraduate CE Students Awarded First Runner-up in the Professor Charles K. Kao Student Creativity Awards 2025

XIE CHEN Zhi Jie Jacky, an undergraduate Computer Engineering (CE) student supervised by Dr. SUM Kwok Wing Anthony from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has been awarded First Runner-up in the Undergraduate Individual Entry of the Professor Charles K. Kao Student Creativity Awards 2025 for the project titled, “Developing a Web-Based System for Improving Chinese Handwriting Quality through Font Analysis and Education.”

This project explores the enhancement of Chinese handwriting through a web-based system that integrates game-based learning and employs the Hough Transform algorithm for assessing Chinese penmanship. The research focuses on stroke order, aesthetics, and the educational needs of students.

Participants interact with the web-based system, which provides engaging gameplay to enhance their understanding of proper Chinese character writing. An experimental methodology is utilized to evaluate the system’s effectiveness. The results demonstrate a positive impact of the web-based system on Chinese penmanship, underscoring the importance of stroke order and aesthetic appeal. These findings contribute to the advancement of Chinese handwriting education and promote the development of effective learning tools for improving penmanship skills.
