===== Introduction =====

Both machine learning and intelligent information retrieval are two important topics for Neural Networks and Computational Intelligences. They are extensively studied in IJCNN and WCCI technical sessions.

This special session will focus on machine learning techniques for intelligent information retrieval of multimedia data. In particular, we are interested in how machine learning approaches can solve problems with high-dimensionality, handle large scale datasets, and process temporal information of multimedia data.  Both theoretical paradigm as well as applied approaches will be examined. 

The goal is to draw together researchers from both communities of machine learning and intelligent information retrieval not only for sharing their insightful research experiences from each field, but more importantly, inspiring new research directions and hence proposing possible solutions for existing open problems. Original papers in the field of machine learning or information retrieval are all welcome for submission, provided that they are trying to bring new problems, novel ideas or practical solutions to enhance each side appropriately.

The topics of the session include, but are not limited to:
  * Information retrieval using probabilistic and machine learning techniques
  * Statistical models for large-scale multimedia information retrieval
  * Feature selection for intelligent retrieval
  * Active learning/Semi-supervised learning/Transfer learning for information retrieval
  * New advances of relevance feedback approaches in multimedia information retrieval
  * Web page searching/ranking algorithms using computational intelligence approaches
  * Text categorization or web page classification based on machine learning
  * Email and web spamming detection
  * Survey or empirical studies of machine learning in information retrieval 

Interactive software demonstrations are welcome.

Submitted manuscripts should be within six pages in the IEEE two-column and IEEE-compatible PDF format, including figures, tables, and references. ==== Prof. Irwin King ====

Prof. Irwin King received the BSc degree in Engineering and Applied Science from California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, in 1984. He received his MSc and PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, in 1988 and 1993 respectively.  He joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1993. His research interests include machine learning, multimedia processing, and web intelligence. He is currently an associate professor in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is a member of ACM, IEEE Computer Society, International Neural Network Society (INNS), and Asian Pacific Neural Network Assembly (APNNA). Currently, he is serving the Neural Network Technical Committee (NNTC) and the Data Mining Technical Committee under the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (formerly the IEEE Neural Network Society). He is also a governing board member of the Asian Pacific Neural Network Assembly (APNNA).  He serves in many journal as associate editor or a member of Editorial Board including  IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks (TNN), International Journal of Intelligent Computing and Cybernetics (IJICC), Neural Information Processing-Letters & Review (NIP-LR), Journal of Nonlinear Analysis and Applied Mathematics, JNAAM. ==== Prof. Michael R. Lyu ====

Prof. Michael R. Lyu is currently a Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong . Prof. Lyu received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1981, his M.S. in Computer Science from University of California, Santa Barbara , in 1985, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of California, Los Angeles in 1988.  Prof. Lyu's research interests include software reliability engineering, distributed systems, fault-tolerant computing, web technologies, mobile networks, digital video library, multimedia processing, and video searching and delivery. He has participated in more than 30 industrial projects in these areas, and helped to develop many commercial systems and software tools. He has been frequently invited as a keynote or tutorial speaker to conferences and workshops in U.S., Europe, and Asia.  Prof. Lyu has published over 280 refereed journal and conference papers in his research areas. He initiated the first International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE) in 1990. He was the Program Chair for ISSRE'96, Program co-Chair for WWW10, General Chair for ISSRE'2001, General co-Chair for PRDC'2005, and has served in program committees for many conferences. He is the editor for two book volumes: Software Fault Tolerance, published by Wiley in 1995 and the Handbook of Software Reliability Engineering, published by IEEE and McGraw-Hill in 1996. These books have received an overwhelming response from both the academia and the industry. He was an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Reliability, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and Journal of Information Science and Engineering. He is currently on the editorial board of Wiley Software Testing, Verification and Reliability Journal. He was elected to IEEE Fellow (2004) and AAAS Fellow (2007) for his contributions to software reliability engineering and software fault tolerance. ==== Dr. Kaizhu Huang ====

Dr. Kaizhu Huang received the B.E. in Automation from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1997. He then obtained his M.E in Pattern Recognition and Intelligence Systems in Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2000. He got his Ph.D in Computer Science and Engineering in 2004. He worked as a researcher in Information Technology Laboratory, Fujitsu Research Center from 2004 to 2007. He is currently a research fellow in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include machine learning, information retrieval, and pattern recognition. He served as a program committee member and also chaired a special session in ICONIP 2006. ==== Dr. Haixuan Yang ====

Dr. Haixuan Yang received the B.S. in Mathematics from Lanzhou University in 1990. He then obtained his M.S. in Mathematics from Qufu Normal University in 1993. He got his Ph.D in Mathematics from Lanzhou University in 1996. He worked as a lecturer from 1996 to 1998 and as an associate professor from 1999 to 2003 in Tianjin University of Commerce. He obtained his Ph.D in Computer Science and Engineering from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2007. He is currently a research associate in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include machine learning, information retrieval, and information systems. He served as a program co-chair in the Second Beijing Hong Kong international Doctoral Forum in 2006.
