About Me

I am a PHD candidate in Computer Science and Engineering Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. I am interested in wireless networks, particularly in multi-hop networks such as wireless sensor (and actuator) networks.

I received a Master of Philosophy degree with thesis title "Energy-efficient Reliable Wireless Sensor Networks". My supervisors are Prof. Michael R. Lyu and Prof. Jiangchuan Liu. Prof. JC Liu is with School of Computing Science, Simon Fraser University, Canada. Here is the website of Prof. JC Liu's Multimedia and Wireless Networking Group and also a photo of Prof. JC Liu's CUHK team.

I received my B.Sc. degree from Department of Electronics at Beijing University under the supervision of Prof. Xuzong Chen in 2000. I worked at Prof. Chen's Laboratory of Laser Cooling and Atom Trapping (now a major part of the Institute of Quantum Electronics) at Beijing University during my undergraduate years and designed some electronic devices for the lab's Laser Frequency Stabilization System. However, I know little on quantum electronics even now. But great physical scientists and mathematicians are always heros in my heart. See ukim's article entitled "heros in my heart" and a (very interesting) biography of Dr. Richard Feynman: Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman (and a Chinese online version).

Before coming to CUHK, I've been working in industrial area for several years as hardware engineer with Huawei Technologies, later software engineer with Ramaxel Ltd. and Yongda Electronics Ltd, all in China. I wrote a memory tester (in protected-mode assembly language) for Ramaxel. Ramaxel is the largest memory manufactory in China and 4th largest memory manufactory in the world which produces the memories for up to 60% of the branded PCs/Notebooks/Servers sold in China. As a result, my codes have been working on the memories of most branded computers in China. :-) In Yongda, my colleagues and I were in charging of the authorization and encryption modules (X.501 CA, RA and an SSL-like communication module) for a railway ticket selling system, which is now widely adopted in China.

More About Me

I was born and raised in Lufeng (Chinese: 陆丰), China. Something interesting about Lufeng is that it officially includes a 1681-square-km mainland-region and the Dongsha Islands (Pratas Islands). The mainland area where I was born is administered by Guangdong Province, but the Islands are administered by the Taiwan Government.

My mother is Hoklo people (Chinese: 鹤佬人) and my father is from Teochew (Chinese: 潮州). As a result, I'm a native speaker of Southern Min language (Chinese: 闽南语). My "strange" accent is influenced by Hoklo dialect (Chinese: 鹤佬话) and Teochew dialect (Chinese: 潮州话). And I can probably understand the languages spoken by Chinese people from Eastern Guangdong, Southern Fujian, Taiwan, and Singapore.

Besides Southern Min language, I also speak Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese fluently, both of which were learnt when I was a young boy. But I seldom spoken Cantonese until I came to Hong Kong where most people speak Cantonese here. I can also understand Hakka language and a little Wu language which I am currently learning.
