ABSTRACT:

Mobile devices, such as cellular phones and PDAs, are increasingly common in daily uses. Images with much higher resolutions and different aspect ratios than the small screens of these devices need to be adapted to fit the target displays. Effective retargeting requires emphasizing the important content while retaining surrounding context with minimal visual distortion. In this talk, our recent work on content-aware image retargeting using mesh parameterization is presented. We first construct the representation which enables preservation of image structures during retargeting, and further formulate the image retargeting as a constrained image mesh parameterization problem that aims at finding a homomorphous target mesh with desired size. We associate image saliency into the image mesh and regard such structure as constraints for mesh parameterization. Using stretch-based mesh parameterization process, we obtain the homomorphous target mesh, which is then used to render the target image by texture mapping. The retargeting method emphasizes important image content while retaining the surrounding context with minimal visual distortion. Our proposed approach exhibits superior performance in several aspects compared to existing methods.
