ABSTRACT:

Open source software has changed the rules of the game, impacting significantly the economic behavior of stakeholders in the software ecosystem. This talk analyzes the economic position and motivation of system integrators, start-up firms, and individual software developers. A particular focus is put on the distinction between community open source and commercial open source and the underlying business models. The impact on software developer careers and academic curricula is explored.

BIOGRAPHY:

Dirk Riehle is a software researcher and entrepreneur. He leads the open-source research group at SAP Research, SAP Labs LLC, in Palo Alto, Silicon Valley. Dirk has worked in Germany, Switzerland, and the United States. He was the leader of the team that designed and implemented the first UML virtual machine. In 2005, Dirk started the WikiSym conference series of which he was the first conference chair. Dirk holds a Ph.D. in computer science from ETH Zurich and an M.B.A. from Stanford Universit
