For the past ten years, we have witnessed a tremendous push of academic research on Information Sciences in Asia. As a matter of fact, IS is one of the major strategic investments in CUHK.
Yet, there are many challenges and questions, for example:
a) Money alone is not sufficient to build a reputable research programme, what is the right culture that we need to create?
b) How should we classify and quantify outstanding research ?
c) What are the cultural differences between top tier universities, like MIT and UC. Berkeley, as compare with universities in Asia?
d) How can we enhance academic achievement and yet accommodate academic freedom?
e) Do we need industrial support to build a reputable academic programme?
f) What is the right measure? Conference vs. journal, SCI vs. citation, collaborative research (with a long list on authorship) vs. few and selective publications, .....?
g) Is there any cultural difference between the East and the West on doing IS research?
h) What is our wish list and challenges if we want to build a top- tier programme?
We welcome colleagues and students to attend, as well as to participate in the Q&A session.
