ABSTRACT:

The entrance to graduate school marks a critical phase of transition for most graduate students from absorbing knowledge to creating knowledge. To excel in research, we must sharpen our skills in research. In this talk, I want to share with students what I have learned on how to do research, including:

* How to develop a research agenda centered on the intersection of one's interest, talent and societal needs?

* How to systematically formulate candidate research problems and estimate their potential impacts?

* How to give presentation in a way that is interesting, informative and insightful?

BIOGRAPHY:

Lui Sha graduated with PhD from CMU in 1985. He was member and then senior member of technical staff at the Software Engineering Institute, CMU from 1985 to 1998. Since 1998, he has been a professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He is active in the research of dependable real time systems and has published over 100 papers. He was elected to be a Fellow of ACM in 2005 for contributions to real time systems. He received the Outstanding Technical Contributions and Leadership award from IEEE Technical Committee on Real-Time Systems in Dec. 2001. He was elected to be a Fellow of the IEEE in 1998 "for technical leadership and research contributions which enabled the transformation of real-time computing practice from an ad hoc process to an engineering process based on analytic methods." His research was cited in the Selected Accomplishments section of the National Academy of Science's report, Computing the Future: A Broader Agenda for Computer Science and Engineering. He was listed twice in UIUC's teachers ranked excellent by their students.
