ABSTRACT:

Description Logics (DLs) are a family of logic based knowledge representation formalisms. Although they have a range of applications, they are perhaps best known as the basis for widely used ontology languages such as OIL, DAML+OIL and OWL, the last of which is now a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) recommendation (standard). In order to make the DL-based standard ontology language more widely acceptable, ontology usability has been identified one of the key issues in the development of the Semantic Web. In particular, some new reasoning services are required so as to provide more fine- grain support for ontology applications. This talk will report some recent developments of ontology usability (and related reasoning services), such as scalability, ontology explanations, partial ontology reuse and ontology inconsistency/unsatisfiability handling.

BIOGRAPHY:

Jeff Z. Pan received the PhD degree in computer science from the University of Manchester in 2004. He is a lecturer of computing science at the University of Aberdeen, U.K. His main research interests lie in the design of logics and ontology languages, automated reasoning, and the applications of all the above (such as in the Semantic Web). He has published widely in leading journals and conferences on ontologies and the Semantic Web, and has also been a member of program/organizing committees of numerous international conferences and workshops. He has been active in the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), serving as an invited reviewer of the semantics and abstract syntax of the Web Ontology Language OWL for the WebONT Working Group (2002-2004), a co-coordinator of both the Software Engineering and the Multimedia Task Forces in the W3C Semantic Web Best Practices and Deployment Working Group (2004-2006), and currently a co-chair the W3C Multimedia Semantics Incubator Group and a member of the Rule Interchange Format (RIF) Working Group. He is also a co-chair of the Fuzzy RuleML Technical Group and a member of the RuleML steering committee.
