The Development of a Virtual Reality Ultrasound Guided Organ Biopsy Training System (S. M. Ho and P. A. Heng)
In this project, we propose to build a prototype virtual reality ultrasound guided organ biopsy system to facilitate the training of radiologists and physicians in ultrasound guided interventional procedures. The research issues to be addressed include a 3D anatomical model reconstruction, data fusion of multiple modalities data, realistic rendering and deformation, interactive navigation and visualization, and multi-sensory feedbacks. This training system will provide and actual view of ultrasound images, in real-time, while performing an examination on a life-like mannequin. This is a cost-effective approach to providing standardized clinical education, training and accelerated learning. We believe the proposed system can provide trainees with a structured leaning experience, permitting practice with no danger to patients.
