End System Multicast: Theory, System and Applications (John C.S. Lui)
One of the major problems about IP multicasting is on the
deployment. Either many existing routers are not IP-multicast enable
or many ISP and system administrators are unwilling to turn on the
multicast features. This creates a major deployment hurdle for
performing IP multicasting on the Internet. One way to overcome this
problem is to enable the application-level multicast. This research
examines the theoretical issues (e.g., distributed mutual exclusion,
distributed locking,....etc) as well as system implementation on the
basic infrastructure so that we can deploy a large scale multicasting
service on the Internet.
