Undergraduate Programme

Information technology is a major area of future development in Hong Kong. Information technology refers to the computer digital technology used in coding, data storage, communication and rendering. The most common forms of information technology include the Internet, databases, virtual libraries, e-commerce, CD ROM's, even automatic teller machines. In particular, the rapid development of the Internet in recent years has made it an indispensable part of life. Like the computer science departments in the most technologically advanced countries, the department has the dual mission of teaching and developing information technology.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the first such academic department in Hong Kong. Its undergraduate syllabi provide a solid foundation in information technology, linked with training in practical applications of these ideas through projects and laboratories. The Programme in Computer Science covers software engineering, computer networking, Internet, databases and multi-media technology. The Programme in Computer Engineering offers courses in areas including computer interfacing, very large-scale integration circuit design (VLSI), computer-aided design and microprocessor systems. Students can also choose from courses on subjects including artificial intelligence, Chinese computing, computer animation technology, virtual reality and data mining.

The rapid development of IT in recent years has opened up many jobs in software development in Hong Kong. The curriculum at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is the most comprehensive one in this area. Due to its long history, many of its early graduates have assumed important positions in the IT departments of different companies and organizations, providing a valuable alumni network for new graduates. Graduates of the department are prepared to take up jobs in software development, system design and analysis, and information engineering management etc. They can also choose to pursue advanced research in IT.
