FAQ
What is the differences between the Engineering Faculty IT minor program and our CS minor program?
The engineering faculty IT minor program is designed for
those who have no strong science background to improve their
IT proficiency so that they are more competitive in their own fields.
Our CS minor program, on the other hand, is more technical in nature.
After graduation, our minor students can take up jobs in IT and
computer industry. Moreover, our minor graduates can apply to our
MPhil and MSc programs.
What is the relation between IT and CS?
Information technology refers to the computer technology appropriate to the encoding, storage, communication, control and use of information. Applications of information technology can be seen in internet, databases, digital libraries, e-commerce, CD-ROM storage, ATM and banking, etc. Like similar computer science departments in all other advanced countries, we are responsible for the major roles of education and pioneering in information technology.
I am a Social Science student with no applied mathematics background. Will I be admitted into this programme?
There won't be any problem in admitting you.
I am an engineering student and I have already taken several CS courses. Can I apply to this programme?
Yes, you are welcome to apply to our minor program. In fact, students are allowed to exempt up to 9 units of courses, if they have taken the equivalent courses.
Is there any pre-requisite for joining this programme?
No pre-requisite is required to join the CS minor program. Your interest in IT and computer science is more important than anything else.
Is it too late for a year 3 students to join this programme?
No. For students who have already taken some courses in year 1 and
year 2, they should have no problem in completing the program. Those
who have not taken any CS minor course before may not have sufficient
time to complete the 18-units requirment. We recommend students to
take some courses in their lower years.
Can I take some of the courses as electives?
You may take any of those CS minor courses as electives as long
as you have fulfilled the course prerequisite requirements, if
there is any. In fact, it may not be a bad idea to take some CS
minor courses as electives initially. When you feel these CS
minor courses are useful to you, then you may consider
registering as the CS minor students.
I am a M.Phil student from the Arts Faculty. Can I take some of
the courses in this programme?
You may not be able to gain any credit by taking these courses.
But you may sit-in some courses, subject to the availability of
vacancies of the courses. The priority of taking the courses still
goes to the undergraduate students.
Is programming knowledge required to take these courses?
The first CS minor course you need to take is a programming
course. Therefore, prior programming knowledge is not
required.
I know Engineering Majors have to do a final year project. Does
this programme also require a project?
Each course has its own set of course exercises and projects.
There is no extra requirement to complete a final year project in
order to fulfil the CS minor requirements.
Is there any advisor whom I can talk to if I have any question on
the programme?
If you have any question on the programme, you could send an
email to the advisor.
Simple questions will be dealt with by emails. The advisor may
also talk to you in case you have more complex problems.
After completing this minor, what kind of jobs can we take up?
After graduation, our minor students can take up jobs in
software development, system design and analysis, information
engineering management, etc. For example, quite a few
computer officers in our computer center are graduated from our minor
program. Moreover, our minor graduates can apply to our MPhil
program.
What if I cannot fulfil the Minor requirements?
You have nothing to lose even if you cannot complete all the
requirements. There is no penalty incurred due to failure to
complete a minor program. Of course, you cannot claim to your
prospective employer that you have completed a basic CS
training program. But you still can inform your future boss that
you have certain amount of understanding of IT and CS.
I am a year 2 student and I am very interested in minoring in CS.
However, I am not sure if I can complete it successfully due to my
major workload. Can I wait unitl year 3?
We suggest that you enroll the minor program now. There is no
harm/penalty even if you cannot complete all the requirements. But if
you can, you will graduate with a CS minor degree.
