Enroll in the minor program of Computer Science is the first step to the IT and computer industry.

What is IT?

Computer and information technology (IT) refers to the computer technology applied to the encoding, storage, communication, control and use of information. Applications of information technology can be seen in internet, databases, digital libraries, e-commerce, CD-ROM storage, ATM and banking, etc. The development of computer and information technology does not slow down, despite the "dotcom" bubble has burst. In fact, computer and Information technology is an IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT THEME in the foreseeable future of Hong Kong. According to the Government Report released in June 2003 about the Manpower projection for the information technology domain up to 2007, IT manpower is projected to rise from 63100 in 2002 to 85000 in 2007, equivalent to an average annual growth rate of 6.1%. This is considerably faster than the projected average annual growth of 1.5% in overall manpower requirement in the economy over the same period.

Our department is responsible for the major roles of education and pioneering in information technology. As compared to the IT minor program, our program is more technical in nature. After graduation, our minor students can take up jobs in IT and computer industry. Moreover, our minor graduates can apply to our MPhil and MSc programs.

Your Future Path

The department of Computer Science and Engineering is the department that provides the most comprehensive syllabus in computer and information technology. Our minor program can help in the future profession and career development of graduates since most systems in accounting, social sciences, economics, etc, are computerized nowadays. Due to the longest history of the department, our earlier graduates (both major and minor) have assumed major positions in the IT departments of many companies, forming a strong alumni network for our new graduates. After graduation, our minor students have taken up jobs in software development, system design and analysis, information engineering management, etc. For example, quite a few computer officers in our computer center are graduated from our minor program. In addition, our minor graduates may also choose to pursue research in new directions in information technologies, as is now under vigorous promotion by both the government and industries of Hong Kong.
