| Introduction |
|
|
Established more than 30 years, the Department of Computer Science &
Engineering (CSE) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong was a pioneer of
its kind in Hong Kong. Compared with computer science departments in other
advanced countries, our department is playing the leading role in
education and pioneering of computer and information technology. Our
degree programmes are well established and recognized internationally. In
1983, the Computer Science programme became the first overseas programme
accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS). Currently, both Computer
Science and Computer Engineering programmes are accredited by the Hong Kong
Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and enjoy the
prestigious and recognition, in Hong Kong, China and overseas.

Programme Features
|
|
The CSE Department offers two undergraduate programmes --- Computer Science
and Computer Engineering. The two programmes provide a solid foundation in
information technology, combined with training in practical applications
of these ideas through project and laboratory practices. Students will
learn about software engineering, computer networking, internet,
databases, computer security, information systems, multimedia
technologies, programming languages (such as Java and C++), theoretical
computer science, artificial intelligence, computer aided design, and
digital hardware technologies, VLSI design and testing, micro-processor
and embedded system designs,..., etc. All these will help our graduates in
finding a well-recognized career in IT industry, financial industry,
service and consulting industry, as well as the possibility of doing
graduate studies.

Study Pattern
|
The Computer Science programme focuses on software aspect of information
technologies, with emphasis on designs and applications of information
systems, internet, multimedia, databases, graphics and intelligent
systems.
The Computer Engineering programme focuses on the interaction between
hardware and software aspects of information technology and system
integration, with emphasis on microprocessor systems, computer
interfacing, integrated circuit design (VLSI) and computer aided design
(CAD).
Since the department carries two programmes, students in our department
have the flexibility to take courses from these two streams. In other
words, CS students can choose to learn more about hardware and CE students
can take on more training in software design.

Work-Study Programme
| |
The Department always encourages its students to participate
in the work-study programme. More opportunities have been given to students for
applying what they have learnt in college to the real workplace so that
they could have a better understanding on the operation and job nature of
different business. The programme has gained more and more
support and participation from both students and corporations.
Having completed their second year or third year of study, students may
apply for work in a selected company for a year. The
work experience gained has been approved by the Hong Kong
Institute of Engineers as one of the requirements of membership
application. Students may also have a chance to be directly hired by their
intership companies after they graduate.
|
Student Exchange Programme
|
The Faculty of Engineering
has established the "Engineering Student Exchange Program (ESEP)"
to offer more chances of overseas exchange study for its students to
receive engineering education in some well-known overseas universities.
The exchange experiences enable the students to widen their horizon,
enhance their language ability, and train their independence.

Scholarships
| |
The University, Colleges and our Department offer scholarships to
students. Most scholarships are granted based on students' academic
merits. In the academic year of 2005-2006,
thirty six students of the Department have obtained scholarships with
total amount of over $500,000.
The Computer Science and Engineering Entrants Scholarship is
administered by our Department. The scholarship awards newly admitted
students who obtained outstanding academic results in HKALE, HKCEE or NEEUC.
In the academic year of 2006-2007, the total amount for Entrants Scholarship
offered by the Department is $300,000.
