Due to advances in information technology, there is a huge demand for
software development professionals in Hong Kong. Moreover, there has been
a trend of increasing IT usage and penetration in both the business and
household sectors. In recent years, we are seeing signs that there is a
huge demand of IT workforce.
One important thing to note is that the huge demand of IT workforce not
only appears locally and in China, but this demand continue to increase
in developed countries such as USA, England, France, and many European
countries.
As a matter of fact, most of our fresh graduate got job offers
immediately after graduation. Due to our long history and the
high quality of our students, our graduates have assumed major
positions in the IT departments of many companies, forming a
strong alumni network for our new graduates. After graduation,
our students have taken up jobs in software development, system
design and analysis, and information engineering management,
etc. Some of them choose to pursue advanced research in IT.
Our students are keenly sought by local employers.
Despite the unemployment problem in Hong Kong, our surveys show
that most of our fresh graduates got their job offer by July,
all were employed by October. Over 20% got 3 or more job
offers. After the crises of SARS and economic depression
dissipated, there is a great demand for the IT professionals in
our society. As compared to the 2003 graduates, the job market
has greatly improved for the 2005 graduates. In 2003, only 10%
of the graduates had a monthly salary over $10,000. But in 2005,
the percentage has risen to 80%. Almost half of the 2005
graduates have a monthly salary over $12,000, and 90% of them
were employed within a month after graduation.
Many of our students continue with postgraduate studies both
locally and at top overseas universities. Our recent survey
indicates that many of our graduates have multiple jobs offer
upon graduation, and many of them find their career
opportunities in major financial firms, consulting firms and
IT companies (e.g., Hong Kong Bank, Google, Intel, Morgan
Stanley, Microsoft, IBM, etc). Many of our students continue
their postgraduate studies in top overseas universities such
as Princeton University, Columbia University, UC Berkeley,
Cambridge University, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign and UCLA.
We take pride in our study program and we are especially proud
of our students. For the past 30 years, the department has
been working diligently to train the top minds and leaders in
IT, and the achievements of our graduate speak for our
dedication.
