The future of Hong Kong and the future of China, depend on the successful
transformation into an IT-based, knowledge driven economy. Computer
Science and Computer Engineering are two important disciplines that can
help to speed up this transformation. The urgent needs to transform the
societal economy have created ample of opportunities, as well as
challenges for this generation: how can we collaborate, and at the same
time, compete with many IT talents from other part of the world; how to
take advantage of the globalization effects; how can we quickly access and
utilize the information we gather from the Internet; how to create new
knowledge and new services so as to make ourselves more productive. Yet
most important of all, how can we build upon the fundamental knowledge
that we learn and create new theories, new systems and new services so as
to improve the quality of human life and to meet the challenge of
tomorrow. As educators, we believe the answer to questions above is to
offer high quality education and excellent research so to stimulate the
mind of our next generation.
