|Title:||Digital Ocular Imaging Research|
|Date:||June 10, 2016 (Friday)|
|Time:||10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.|
|Venue:||Room 121, 1/F, Ho Sin-hang Engineering Building,
The Chinese University of Hong Kong,
|Speaker:||Dr. Jimmy Liu
Professor, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ningbo
Principle Scientist (Adj), Singapore National Eye Research Institute
In the talk, Jimmy will share his ocular imaging research conducted with ophthalmologists from many counties in the past 10 years. He will introduce the landscape of the ocular imaging research and share the intelligent medical image processing work on various ocular imaging modalities such as fundus, Retcam, OCT (optical Coherence Tomography), OCT Angiogram. He will introduce the current issues, technologies and approaches in this inter-disciplinary research area and cover his work on the 4 areas: ocular disease screening, robot assisted eye micro-surgery, ocular biometrics, as well as ocular medical informatics using genome study (Ocular Precision Medicine). He will give two examples on his glaucoma automatic screening work with detailed approaches.
Jimmy will also share how ocular imaging research efforts are noticed by the cardiologists and dermatologists, which results in the expansion of the research to other medical imaging research area such as coronary vessel and skin medical image analysis using the technologies developed from the ocular imaging research.
Dr. Jimmy Liu joined Chinese Academy of Sciences in Ningbo in March 2016 through the China "thousand talent program" as a senior professor. He was enrolled into the Gifted Young program from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1983, and Master and Ph.D degrees from the National University of Singapore majoring in Computer Science.
Jimmy has spent 27 years in Singapore after his graduation from China. He had worked for 14 years in Multi-National Corporations and Government linked enterprises as well as a start-up from 1989. His experiences included working as programmer, assistant engineer, engineer, product manager, R&D head and company director.To fulfill his interest in medical imaging, he joined academy in 2004. In the past 13 years, Jimmy established the Intelligent Medical Imaging Department (iMED) in A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) Singapore, which is the largest ocular imaging research team in the world, and became the founding department head focusing on medical imaging research. He was also the PIs and Co-PIs of 18 National academic research competitive grants, totaling 22 Million Singapore Dollar (about 17Million US dollars). He had published more than 200 international peer reviewed academic papers including ones in JAMIA, IEEE TMI, CVPR, MICCAI, etc. Jimmy had more than 40 patents and some of them had been licensed to international and Singapore enterprises. To ensure long-term collaboration and technology licensing, Jimmy established an industrial oriented joint laboratory ATLANTIA (Advanced Technology Laboratory for A*STAR and TOPCON Innovative Alliance) with world leading ophthalmological equipment manufacture TOPCON Inc. (a member of Toshiba group, a 80+ year old company which has been listed in Tokyo stock exchanges for 30 years). He was the founding director for ATLANTIA, which is the first of its kind for TOPCON Inc. Jimmy also paid close attention to the collaboration with clinicians. He established another joint laboratory AVATA (Advanced Vision and Technology Alliance), which was established between A*STAR and the Singapore National Healthcare Group (NHG), Jimmy also became the found director for this laboratory.
Jimmy is holding the adjunct principle research scientist position in Singapore National Eye Research Institute, and was the 2014 chairman of the IEEE EMBS (Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society) of Singapore.
In the near future, Jimmy tries to establish close alliances with academic, industrial and clinical alliance for medical imaging technology translation.
